Turkey Feather Craft Jar

This is a super easy craft to make. I keep glass jars in my living room and decorate them with different fillers and crafty thoughts during the holidays. It's been a big success and the holiday decor has taken less space so while deciding what to do for thanksgiving, I thought up this turkey.
You will need: feathers, a brown paper (mine is a cork paper that I got at a scrapbook store), 1 small black paper scrap, 1 orange paper scrap, and 1 red paper scrap. We used tape to attach everything. It's pretty much fool proof

Last Minute Creative Advice for a Great Thanksgiving

So Thanksgiving is only 3 days away and if you are like me, you have procrastinated it until the bitter end. I actually am usually great at planning ahead of time when it comes to the holidays. That's how I manage to get my posts up and hopefully inspire somebody out there in this weird world of cyber buddies. Anyhow, I have done a terrible job and should never be able to blog again. Sorry, Sometimes I can get a little dramatic, I guess all will be fine and I'm sure you've found plenty of ideas out there but I thought I could share some last minute words of reason for those of you who are still panicking about your turkey day (and just so you know, none of these talk about how to cook a turkey since I don't have a clue! I've never done it)

1. be thankful. At the end of all of the panic, stress, and triptafan; this holiday is about being grateful for what we have and so as long as you think about that, even a burnt turkey, without mashed potatoes and no stuffing whatsoever will still be a success be cause you chose to show thanks.

2. use what you have. find decor you have around the house. lets see...construction paper? great! cut out turkey feathers and glue them to paper cups. pinecones in the backyard? perfect! place them around the table or one on each plate for a fun rustic look, or maybe do you have paper bags? well what about making a paper bag place setting. take a look at the paper bag silverware holder I made.

3. make a list. lists make me happy, they bring me joy because everything is organized and less stressful. If you wait until thursday afternoon to make a list and you are leaving for grandma's in 5 minutes, believe me...you will forget something. start writing it down now and make a list of all the things you need to get at the store, take to thanksgiving, set up at home, decorate with, wash so it's ready to be used...etc. the list topics are probably endless, just make it simple for you.

4. wear it. you don't just have to be festive on the tables. their are so many fabulous ideas out there for turkey day clothes, kid dress ups, and easy to make paper hats. Here is pinterest's page for "Thanksgiving Dress"

5. new traditions can be FUN. I know we all love our turkey and mashed potatoes and some of us have a sentimental need for them. I mean truly, Their are those people (you know who you are) that if their thanksgiving dinner did not have these two items they would probably start soft sobbing which would eventually turn into a violent panic attack but trust me! it will be okay. Mix it up, add some new recipes and even mix some of the old with the new. You can also do something fun like family football, or go to the movies, maybe play a game...It's important to grow and change traditions so that they stay relevant and exciting. See my post on a Non Traditional Thanksgiving

6. less is more. If their is one thing I have learned about party planning, holidays, and life....minimal is wonderful and it also looks great! If you go overboard, you are going to spend too much money, be too stressed to enjoy any part of the day, and you will probably not get everything done you had hoped for. Stick to your plan and don't budge. Get the few things you have planned for and forget the over the top stuff..

7. assign tasks. Let others help. This is something that I struggle with. I am a bit of a control freak and I have a hard time letting others do stuff. That's not to mean, I'm a perfectionist..I'm not but I want things to look good and I sometimes feel like I can't count on others to bring what they said and I like to have things planned and accounted for. Unfortunately, what I have realized is that while everyone looks perfect when I do it all by myself, I do not enjoy any of it and don't get to have a good day. I am focused on cooking, decorating, organizing, cleaning, hosting, etc. and have not time for fun. This is THANKSGIVING, meaning it doesn't matter what the table cloth looks like or how the yams taste, it's about giving thanks and spending time with family. LET OTHERS HELP.

8. get it catered. If you read #5 and were annoyed with my thoughts, you probably won't like this one either but I know many families who opt out of a traditional thanksgiving dinner and instead choose a stress fee chinese take out option or delivery pizza and love it. I also know some families who buy turkey dinners at nearby restaurants or pick up a thanksgiving dinner and eat it at home. My thoughts are, whatever makes you happy is the way to go. I can definitely understand the need for a stress free holiday and well, we all know the food is where the stress lies on thanksgiving. I also should mention I have never not had a traditional thanksgiving. Every year, my family makes the turkey, the mashed potatoes, the cranberry sauce, etc. and it's a wonderful day...I just think what works for one person, doesn't work for the next. let it work for you.

9. paper plates or china? this answer will go a long with the vibe of this entire post but I think it's what works for you. You should think about whether you are willing to do all of those dishes after and if you are, well then put out the china but if you have other plans after dinner or just hate the idea of so many dishes, feel free to pass up those nice goblets and adorable serveware. I will be serving china for the adults, and paper plates for the kids. Decide based on your decor as well. If you are doing something that is pretty casual, paper plates will probably look better but if you are doing something really formal with flowers and candles; china might look better.

10. choose a color palette. If you choose your color palette for thanksgiving, it will be much easier to set up the table and find decor that works. Choose a few similar colors (like yellow and orange) or very high contrast colors (like green and red) and try to match up the serving dishes,

11. white is my best friend. I have found that the best idea for saving money during the holidays and parties is to purchase a reusable white table cloth, white cloth napkins, white and glass vases, jars, and plates, and simple serving dishes that are also white, silver, or glass. These colors go with every party and every detail so then you can choose a theme and buy a few colorful detailed items each holiday to decorate with but you are not buying expensive tablecloths over and over again or fun festive dishes that are hard to store. stick with white and simple.

12. be personal. adding personal touches to a holiday, especially thanksgiving can make it really hit home. Adding personal framed photos on the table, activities after you eat that you can share and enjoy together, and also sharing memories with everyone is a perfect way to celebrate thanksgiving.

13. football. football is a part of thanksgiving whether you like it or not. Many guys (and girls too!) end up spending hours watching football during the holiday and also many take part in a fun game of tackle outside. Instead of fighting it, why not embrace the game and add a little festive competition in your thanksgiving dinner, or activities. You could definitely play a traditional outdoor game in the backyard but you could also offer some football appetizers. check out pinterest's search for "football appetizers"

Corn on the Cob Paper Napkin

Corn on the Cob Paper Napkins

I wish I had taken pictures of the process making these because it was so so easy but I used a square green napkin that I unfolded and made it as big as possible. The yellow napkin I used a rectangle napkin and folded both sides in. I then wrapped the yellow in the green and folded each side until it resembled a corn husk. I will post pictures and a step by step tutorial in the next week so you have time to prepare for thanksgiving but wanted to give you a hint on what I was planning!

Metallic Painted Pumpkins for Thanksgiving

Easy place settings are my favorite thing to find. I decided to create a bunch. Some of these I created for a church even we had a few weeks ago, and some I created in preparation for my own thanksgiving that I am helping decorate for. This one is so fun! so easy and you can just use all those little pumpkins you bought for halloween. Simply pick up a spray can of metallic paint and go at it on the pumpkins. I didn't paint this one anywhere near perfect. In truth, I did a very thin layer of paint but I really like the way it turned out and theirs really no way to go wrong with this idea. Also, you can use some gold paint if you like that more. Any metallic paint will look great for thanksgiving. It adds some cool elegance to the table. I added 2 paper napkins (one yellow and one orange) and it creates a really bright modern setting. create away!

Non Traditional Thanksgiving

Okay so their are some of you (like me) who are jumping up and down in excitement for thanksgiving, christmas, and all of the traditional stresses that they bring. I imagine however that their are others of you (like my dad at times) who are picturing the messes, the hours and hours of work, and the cleaning up they will have to do to make an event like Thanksgiving happen. In fact, I imagine many of you would rather order some pizza on thanksgiving and watch the football game--mess free! well I don't write many posts about non-traditional holidays so enjoy it while it lasts. This is for the non traditional thanksgiving. I have included some super easy ideas for those who want minimal mess but I've also included some ideas for the eccentric modernists that just want something different and new.

Delicious turkey pizza, this recipe is awesome and such a great idea. If you aren't into making anything however, you could also call and order a turkey and pesto pizza.

stuffed turkey breast instead of a traditional turkey for thanksgiving
blue and teal fabric garland. these may not be traditional thanksgiving colors but they sure are fabulous for fall
chocolate accorns. oh my decadent! yummy
sweet potato cupcakes. a non traditional idea for a dessert recipe
mashed potato tv dinner cupcakes. this would add a funny and clever touch to a quick thanksgiving
sandwiches instead of spending lots and lots of time cooking a turkey.
vegetarian thanksgiving. it's tough when most traditional recipes include meat...this looks great however!
another vegetarian idea but if you don't want a turkey, make one out of a paper bag and fill with popcorn.
want turkey but not a traditonal one? how about turkey meatballs. mmm mmm good.

Thankful!

I have been decorating for the fall and getting ready for thanksgiving, and it has made me think of all the things I have to be grateful for. It's so easy to ignore everything I have and focus on all my wants and what I feel like are "needs" but once this season comes around I am reminded again of how blessed I am and how I have so much more than I need. I hate that it takes a time like this for me to remember. I wish I would feel blessed all the time and remember what I do have but for some reason, it wears on me all the time and so I need that reminder through the year. I am so grateful to the lovely family I have. They are my rock and keep me grounded. My boys are my life and I feel like they make me a better person. My husband is my best friend and my soul mate. I also want to mention my dear cat, lilly. She has been through a lot these last few years. Being used to having the home all by herself with us to now, being with 2 boys that chase her and bug her, she watches over us and her personality makes me laugh and brings me joy. I love her!
corn on the cob in glass jars can look awesome! it's such a simple decoration idea.

Brown Paper Bag Kids Thanksgiving Setting

Brown Paper Bag Utensil Holder

this is a great idea for a kids place setting at thanksgiving but it could work well for any place setting too! To make the brown paper bag idea, simply fold the paper bag, keeping the opening up front where you will place the silverware. Then cute an opening so you can see the silverware. Last tie it with yarn. I also put a straw in with the silverware. I bought the paper bags, crayons, and straws at the Dollar Tree. You can get a generic box of 64 crayons for $1, a large bag of 50 brown bags for $1, and a package of straws for $1. I did buy the straws and crayons a while back so I cannot guarantee they are still in store but do believe you could find them at a similar price at a walmart, or target.

Paint Chip Turkey Clip Craft

Paint sample turkey clip craft

All you need to make this is:
Paint samples
Scissors
Tape
Clothespin
Markers
Ok guys, this is super easy...in fact, pretty much as easy as it gets. You pick up some paint samples at home depot (or another hardware store). Then you cut them into pieces for the turkey. I picked orange shades but you could do colorful feathers and make it look more traditional. then simply tape each paint sample feather to each other to look like a fan of feathers. Almost last, tape the feathers to a clothespin. Then grab a sharpie marker or two and draw a little turkey face. The end.

Charlie Brown Party Ideas

Charlie Brown Party Ideas

Charlie Brown is a popular character this coming thanksgiving and Christmas season. His story is a timeless treasure and the holidays wouldnt be as wonderful without him. I get really excited to watch his movies every year around this time. I picture Linus with his blanket reciting Luke:2 and Charlie bringing home his humble little Christmas tree. Even as I am writing this blog post, I can't help but smie as I think about Charlie brown and the charm he's brought to my holiday.
I think this theme is a perfect party theme and its something both children and adults can relate with and adore. You could hold so many different events with this theme because so many people connect with it. Take a look at the ideas I've found and enjoy!

Gum Drop Thanksgiving

An Edible Thanksgiving

Last year, I did a gum drop thanksgiving. I made an edible centerpiece/table runner and we made cute gum drop thanksgiving turkeys. It took a bit of time but was a lot of fun to make and everything was edible so people could off the centerpiece if they wanted to.

Gum Drop Table Runner

To make this, I simply cut pieces of wax paper that were the size of the tale runner. I then put down a layer of frosting and some crushed oreos, coconut, pretzels, and any other small candies we could find. I created pumpkins out of gum drop orange slices and I cut a small piece of a green gum drop for the top. I also created gum drop roses. I have a tutorial for that so be sure to check it out. Last, I used some extra candy corn for and a bit of green gum drop to resemble carrots. I had alot of fun creating this centerpiece for thanksgiving and it was definitely a talking point.

Gum Drop Turkeys

to make these, you will need: 1 large gum drop, 1 orange slice, 1 marshmallow, 1 dark green or blue food coloring, 4 toothpicks, and 5 small-regular gum drops. This is a great kids craft for thanksgiving and is easy to make. You will poke the toothpick with a small gum drop as a feather and then stick into the orange slice. After you have created all of the feathers and fourth toothpicks are stuck into the orange slice. You will attach the body by connecting all 5 toothpicks into the large gum drop (body of the turkey). You will need to trim a toothpick so that it can stick into a small gum drop (the head) and then into the large gum drop. You don't want it to be too long and stick out of the head too much (or it might look like pinnochio, lol). You will notice however that the toothpick is sticking out just a little to look like a small beak for the turkey. To attach the eyes, you want to get 2 small tiny pieces of marshmallow, roll them in your hands to look like eyes and then attach a little water and push them on the turkey. To give eyeballs, take a toothpick, put a little food color on it and dab it on each marshmallow so it resembles an eyeball. that's about it! any questions about these directions? feel free to let me know.
